LSI Logic Licenses Synthesizable ARM926EJ-S Core With a Memory Management Unit and Java Support
CAMBRIDGE, England and MILPITAS, Calif., June 5 /PRNewswire/ -- ARM
[(LSE: ARM); (Nasdaq: ARMHY)], the industry's leading provider of 16/32-bit
embedded RISC microprocessor solutions, and LSI Logic Corp. (NYSE: LSI) today
announced that LSI Logic has licensed the ARM926EJ-S(TM) core.
The ARM926EJ-S
core features a Memory Management Unit (MMU), and dedicated hardware support
for Java(TM) utilizing ARM's Jazelle(TM) technology.
The core extends LSI
Logic's CoreWare® offering of ARM cores to support the increasing number of
applications in the communications and storage markets requiring complex
operating systems such as Linux, and also those emerging applications in the
wireless and portable markets benefiting from Java support.
LSI Logic will
implement the ARM926EJ-S core in its 0.13 micron (drawn) Gflx(TM) ASIC process
technology. ``As our customers' system-on-a-chip designs continually increase in
complexity we're seeing a strong trend towards embedding more processor
cores,'' said Rafi Kedem, senior director of processor cores at LSI Logic.
``Our current offerings of the ARM946E-S(TM) core, the ARM966E-S(TM) core, and
the ARM7TDMI-S(TM) core have proven to be some of the most popular IP cores in
our extensive CoreWare library.
Licensing the synthesizable ARM926EJ-S core
gives us an excellent solution for our customers' Linux and Java requirements,
while being fully-compatible with our well-proven AMBA(TM) AHB-based processor
subsystem design methodology.'' The ARM926EJ-S core, the latest member of the industry-leading ARM9E(TM)
family, features ARM's Jazelle technology providing optimum Java byte code
execution performance with low-power consumption.
The ARM926EJ-S core has an
MMU feature for virtual memory support and enhanced performance to run
popular, complex operating systems, such as Windows CE, Linux and the Symbian
Platform.
The core also includes fully-configurable caches and Tightly
Coupled Memories (TCMs) and an integrated AMBA 2.0 AHB interface.
The
ARM926EJ-S core is ideally suited to support designs in the broadband,
networking, storage, wireless, and portable markets. ``This new licensing agreement further strengthens ARM's position as the
RISC processor of choice for innovative embedded systems development, and
demonstrates LSI Logic's continued commitment to the industry-leading ARM®
architecture,'' said Joe Barrett, general manager of Cores for ARM.
``LSI Logic
is a world leader in complex system-on-chip designs, and ARM's Jazelle
technology will provide them with an ideal Java technology-enabled solution
for their leading-edge customer applications.'' In keeping with its performance roadmap, LSI Logic is also announcing the
delivery of the industry's first ARM946E-S cached processor in silicon.
This
processor is one of the first cores on the market to provide fully
configurable caches and TCMs and an integrated AHB interface.
The high degree
of integration and flexibility afforded by the ARM 946E-S core make it
well-suited to a particularly wide variety of applications. LSI Logic was one of ARM's lead partners in the development of the ARM9E
family, the ARM946E-S core and the ARM966E-S core, and became the first ARM
silicon partner to license these macrocells in 1999.
Since then, LSI Logic
has also licensed the ARM MicroPack(TM) and has announced that they have
standardized on the AMBA bus architecture. About ARM ARM is the industry's leading provider of 16/32-bit embedded RISC
microprocessor solutions.
The company licenses its high-performance,
low-cost, power-efficient RISC processors, peripherals, and system-on-chip
designs to leading international electronics companies.
ARM also provides
comprehensive support required in developing a complete system.
ARM's
microprocessor cores are rapidly becoming the volume RISC standard in such
markets as portable communications, handheld computing, multimedia, digital
consumer and embedded solutions.
